Amazing North African adventures

Amazing North African adventures

How do you get to North Africa? Flights from Manchester or Heathrow? A slow boat from Liverpool? Or by climbing three Shropshire hills?

In the Easter holidays four of our intrepid young people aged 11 and 12 plus four excited adults are venturing to North Africa for five days to spend time with Helen and Marc and the children near their home in the foothills of the local mountains. As part of their preparation, and to assist fundraising, they’re going to be climbing some of Shropshire’s finest hills.

This is going to be a fantastic time when they will be able to find out what it is like to live in a country that is so different from ours. While they are there they will be exploring a different culture, tasting (and cooking) the local food as well as learning about different customs such as henna decorations which they are looking forward to having painted on themselves .

They will be trekking in the mountains, with the help of a donkey to carry their belongings, and staying in villages with local families. Along the way they will learn some useful words in the local berber language. Time spent looking round the souks in the local town will be a time to remember with the vibrant colours and smells that are unlike anything they will have seen before. As well as experiencing this amazing culture they would like to bless the children in the villages by taking craft equipment and sharing games and songs.

This is likely to be a once in a lifetime adventure and to help with the cost the group are doing a couple of fundraising activities. The first is a sponsored walk led by Marc – the Three Shropshire Peaks (Lawley, Ragleth and Caradoc hills) – on 20th January when we are hoping to be sponsored per each peak climbed. Look out for details of a North African Meal later as well. If you would like to support our fundraising or find out more about our trip please contact Judith Clarkson.
