“Church Actually” May Preaching Series.

The sermon series in the mornings are on “Church Actually”. One writer described church recently as “God’s brilliant idea.” Beautiful. Inspiring. Life-changing. Nation-shaping. And yet – if we’re honest – that isn’t always how people describe church. I’m reminded of the speaker who was asked “What’s the best thing about the church” and he said “the people.” “And the worst thing?” “The people…” During our May morning services we’re going to have four weeks called “Church Actually”. Using some material from Spring Harvest, we’ll be glimpsing two vital questions for the church, both across the world and here locally. Firstly what actually is the church? What is this God-shaped movement of people across history? Secondly what is the church for? What is our purpose? It is in these two questions......

Evening Service Sermons - The Life of Moses

The sermon series in the evenings is on the life of Moses. ‘Please send someone else!’ That was Moses’ response to God when he called him at the burning bush. He’d already dodged death at birth when he had been hidden in the bulrushes only to land in the arms of Pharaoh’s daughter and be brought up in Pharaoh’s’ palace. And then, after murdering an Egyptian, he’d fled into the desert. It was there in the wilderness, standing on holy ground, he heard God’s call to be the one to lead God’s people out of captivity in Egypt. But Moses, like we so often do, felt inadequate for the task, and made many excuses to try and avoid God’s call. But reluctantly he accepted God’s mission and over the......

Shoe Shining at Easter

As part of our roles as Evangelism Enablers, we are organising a shoe shine, in the town centre, on Saturday the 4th April (the day before Easter Day). It’s going to take place between 10am and noon, on Pride Hill (there will also be a parallel one in Telford). Bishop Mark will be attending, and we’ve already got a few people from other churches coming along, but if you’d like to join in for some or all of the time, that would be amazing. The idea is that in offering to shine people’s shoes we are remembering Jesus washing the disciples’ feet shortly before his death, and enacting our call to serve others in humility and love. We hope that this will speak something of the gospel message into......

Who can you bless? Report back from Discipleship Central

‘Who can you BLESS?’ That was one of the questions posed at our November Discipleship Central as we looked at the question of ‘what it means to live missionally in 21st Century Shrewsbury.’ It was great to have different members of our congregations share their stories of what it has meant for them join in with God’s mission in their neighbourhoods, work places, small groups and families and it is so exciting to see how God is continuing to use ordinary people in the ordinary places of life to bring in his transformation.   So what does it mean to BLESS those around us? Well, many who were there found Dave Ferguson’s acronym (See the full version on YouTube ) a really helpful concept.   He suggests.. B Begin......

Growing Churches Growing Disciples?

Bishop Mark spent a day with us in the autumn, looking at a number of areas of ministry and mission across the parish. Along with George Fisher, the Director of Mission, he met a number of leaders from across Trinity Churches, and was able to both ask questions and reflect with us about some of the different things going on. We had submitted various bits of paperwork in advance, and worked through some of the usual indicators of growth and health at the heart of a local church. But it was the conversations that were most helpful, with “stories from the frontline”, and people speaking of growing sense of new life in particular areas of ministry. Some of the time was spent with wardens, and leadership teams from CTK......
