Weekly email w/b 11th December 2023
Over the last couple of weeks, many and varied carrier bags have started appearing in the church office. With every bag I opened there was always a sense of excitement and joy, because within these bags were hosts of angels. I looked forward to seeing what colour, shape, and size the angels would be.
By the beginning of this week, we had received a total of 514 angels. There were 150 beautifully folded paper angels, 214 brilliant knitted angels, and 150 attractive wooden angels. I was so overwhelmed by people’s dedication and the hard work that had gone into every one.
So, a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to everyone who made an angel or ten. These beautiful angels have flown out of the office and are now all over our community, and some have found new homes already. Our prayer is that these angels will be carriers of hope, joy and peace. Just as that original angelic host invited the shepherds to come and meet the Saviour of the World, so this angelic choir also carry an invitation to ‘join the Song’ at various carol events in the lead up to Christmas.
On each angel is a small tag with these words. “A Saviour has been born to you, he is Christ the Lord.” May this announcement of the angels reach many people this season, that they experience the love and forgiveness of the Saviour. And may we be like those angels that we have received; different shapes, colours, and sizes, all sharing the joyous Good News to those around us – a Saviour has been born to you, He is Christ the Lord.

It’s 17th December, which means it is our Carols by Candlelight services taking place at 4.30pm and 7pm. We’re so grateful to everyone who is involved in these, from choir to orchestra, mulled-wine makers to car parking stewards, welcome team to candle lighters. But this event is never complete without you, and you bringing family, friends and others to come and join us. We’re really excited. Come and join in the song!
We’re also going to be having a carol service in the morning at Radbrook Green, taking place in the community centre at 10.30am. and Gareth Evans will be speaking at the 9am and 11am services at Meole Brace, and Fi Iddon and the pre-school team hosting a nativity service at Holy Trinity Belle Vue.
Our Christmas services and events are now all online. Alongside a busy Sunday of services next week features Carols by carlight on Wednesday evening, and Carols in Cafe Connect on Christmas eve morning. With crib services and a midnight communion, and then Christmas day across our life at Trinity there really is something for everyone. More details – and more exciting ways to join in the Christmas story – on our website.
Then an advance reminder of our services on New Year’s eve, Sunday 31st December. There will be a Joint service at 1030am at Holy Trinity Meole Brace, and our usual End the Year gathering at 6pm that evening which is a more reflective service as we look back over 2023 and look forward to the new year. We’re grateful for the team of bell ringers – as always – for their ringing duties over the new year as well as through Christmas itself.
Click the link below to go to December’s and January’s Trinity Life. Not quite as long as the Radio Times Christmas edition, but it does feature lots of what is going on over the next few weeks. You’ll find there details of all of our events and services, as well as some Christmas resources, latest things to know, and really exciting news of what’s coming up in the new year for people of all ages of life and stages of faith.
We recognise that the New Year can be a really good opportunity to do life differently. There are three ways in which we might walk with you into 2024.
Firstly there’s a Messy Church event on Friday 5th January, with special guest magician / illusionist Mark Harrington who will be bringing his amazing array of skills to a Messy-style event for 0s-11s and their families.
Secondly there’s “Just Ten“, a chance to rediscover ancient wisdom for modern life. With a similar feel to Alpha and the Bible course, we’ll be unpacking the ten commandments, taking one each week and thinking how that speaks to our contemporary life.
Finally “Why on earth” is safe space to listen, to learn, and explore life, the universe and everything. Taking place at Cafe Connect, it’s the sort of place where you can bring some of the big questions we all have.
